Are Supplements Really Worth Taking?

Supplement bottle and pills

The supplement craze has been going on for years now. Whether a supplement has promised to help us lose weight or just get healthier, supplements are the hot topic of debate right now.

Do they work?

Are they safe?

In order to get a firm grasp on this subject, you need the facts.

What kinds of supplements are available?

There are a number of different kinds of supplements on the market right now, including:

  • Amino acids
  • Energy enhancing
  • Herbals
  • Memory boosting
  • Minerals
  • Vitamins
  • Weight and muscle building
  • Weight loss and weight gain

And many more are around too. But what you need to understand is that not all of these supplements are the same. Many of them are actually only marketed as supplements, but may not provide the results that you are expecting.

Vitamins and minerals are building blocks that your body needs in order to maintain proper function – this is a proven fact. However, many people who eat healthy are able to get enough vitamins and minerals from their daily diets.

When you eat lots of fruits and vegetables as well as whole grains and lean meats and dairy, you should be able to provide all the supplements that you need. However, some people think that more is better, so they like to take additional supplementation.

What about herbal supplements?

As for herbal supplements, there is much debate over their efficacy. Some believe that since they have been used in other cultures and countries for years that they are safe and effective.

However, many of these supplements have not been tested thoroughly, so it is difficult to say if they are effective as some testimonials would have you believe.

And even though they are based on herbs, herbals supplements can interact with common medications, so they should not be taken without a doctor’s advice.

Amino acids, weight building/loss, energy enhancing, and memory boosting are types of designer supplements that haven’t been fully tested as well. While their logic and their reasoning may seem legitimate to the common consumer, these are products that have also not been proven effective through scientific studies or any other type of study.

Most supplements are not regulated by the FDA

The truth is that while you’ve liked to think that these companies have your best interests in mind, that is not always the case.

Without any regulation by the FDA, supplements are not proven to be effective at what they are marketed to be effective for, while they also may not contain the right amounts of the supplements that they promise to contain. In short, you are taking your chances with supplements that aren’t tested or regulated.

You will be able to find a statement that restates this fact on supplements that aren’t regulated. Supplements can be a great way to support your body if you are unable to get proper nutrition. Most physicians would agree that taking a multi-vitamin and multi-mineral is a great thing to add to a daily routine.

Women might want to take additional calcium to be sure that they are keeping their bones strong, while men might benefit from the heart related effects of Vitamin C and other antioxidants. But in the end, only you can protect your health, so choose your supplements wisely.
