More and more people have become interested in knowing their body type and in tailoring their diet and exercise plans to this type. There are three primary body types, one of which is the mesomorph.
Characteristics of a mesomorph
The mesomorph body type is characterized by big bones and well defined muscles. Facial features are prominent. Mesomorphs have an athletic looking body and build muscle easily, though they can gain fat, too, if they are not careful about their diets.
They typically have very good posture naturally. Female mesomorphs have an hourglass figure, while males are typically rectangular in build. Their broad shoulders help give them that athletic look.
The best diet for a mesomorph body type
Because mesomorphs naturally look athletic, their dietary needs are fairly normal. They need to eat a variety of foods, and watch their intake of fat and simple carbohydrates to avoid putting on weight.
Good fats, like olive oil, nuts and fish are important to the diet, and should make up about 25% of a mesomorph’s diet.
Mesomorphs build muscle fairly easily, but they will still need plenty of protein in their diets to build bulk.
About 30% of a mesomorph’s diet should come from protein; they may need even more protein if they are trying to build muscle mass.
The other 45% should come from healthy complex carbohydrates, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. White flour and sugar should be avoided in order to avoid gaining fat.
Fitness workouts for a mesomorph
Regular aerobic activity is critical for the mesomorph to prevent gaining fat and to build a healthy cardiovascular system.
Running, walking, cycling and swimming are all good choices, and should be performed at least three times a week for maximum benefit.
Mesomorphs have little trouble building a muscular physique
Toning muscles will be fairly easy for a mesomorph because they are naturally muscular. However, because their muscles are thicker and more powerful than other body types, building mass will require lifting of heavier weights.
Even when just starting out, a mesomorph will want to tackle more weight than other body types who are just beginning to lift.
Aim for working all the major muscle groups three times per week, on alternating days in order to see results.
Mesomorphs have a lot of advantages when it comes to keeping in shape. With a little attention to their diet and some moderate exercise, they should have little trouble maintaining an athletic, shapely body.
If more muscle mass is desired, they can easily get a very lean, powerful and strong look by adding strength training to their workouts, though they will need to lift heavier weights than other body types to see results. Mesomorphs are blessed with one of the easiest body types to maintain.
