5 Examples of Home Gym Equipment

Although it is possible to exercise without the use of expensive equipment, once you sign up for gym membership you expect to have suitable gym equipment to work out with. There are certain types of equipment that are expected to be in any gym regardless of size or reputation.

Below is an overview of some of the more popular types of gym equipment:

1) Treadmills

The treadmill allows the person using it to basically run or walk in place without actually going changing location. Like the stationary bike, the treadmill is ideal for beginners as it is possible to set the speed at which you move.

Despite the benefits and their popularity, this piece of gym equipment does not fully equate to running outside as there is no wind resistance. It can become a chore and quite boring to use a treadmill, however, the user can watch television or listen to music while using the machine.

Treadmills can also place stress on knee joints if not used properly, so always get the advice of a gym instructor before beginning. You want to make sure that you are maintaining the proper form, keeping your head up and back straight as you are moving.

2) Rowing machines

The rowing machine is good for building arms, legs, back and core. This gym equipment provides an all over workout without placing undue stress on the joints. Rowing machines are suitable for use by all age groups, that is, the elderly as well as teenagers.

The rowing motion achieved by this machine is excellent for building the back, arms and abs. A rowing machine is great for burning calories. A steady hour of rowing can result in over eight hundred calories burned.

3) Elliptical machines

Known by many different names, elliptical gliders, elliptical cross trainers or simply ellipticals, this gym equipment is technically a replacement for steppers, treadmills and rowing machines.

They provide the same functions as cycling, walking and some even simulate skiing. Best of all, this equipment is low impact and there isn’t a lot of pressure on joints. Unlike treadmills and exercise bikes, ellipticals provide a wide range of body workouts, some even giving full body workouts, which makes for a less boring routine.

4) Leg press machines

These weight training machines are used to build and strengthen leg muscles, the glutes, and the hamstrings. This piece of gym equipment can also be used in performing squats, and is less stressful on knees and backs.

There are three main types of leg press machines available:

  1. The seated upright leg press machine
  2. The horizontal leg press machine
  3. The vertical leg press machine

5) Lateral pull-down machine

This machine is used generally for back exercises, arms, shoulders, and core strengthening and building the muscles in these areas. This type of machine is touted as being one of the best and a must have piece of gym equipment in any exercise facility. You perform this movement by pulling down on the bar either behind or in front of your head to isolate your deltoid and shoulder muscles.
